The 7th Annual Caboose Cup: Why This Austin Charity Golf Tournament Means Everything to Steve Robertson
Monday, September 21, 2026 | 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM | Grey Rock Golf Club & Tennis, Austin, TX | Benefiting the Colon Cancer Coalition
The 7th Annual Caboose Cup is a charity golf tournament held in Austin, Texas on Monday, September 21, 2026 from 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM at Grey Rock Golf Club & Tennis. Hosted by Austin realtor Steve Robertson, the morning scramble raises money for the Colon Cancer Coalition to fund colorectal cancer screening, early detection, and prevention. Registration is $175 early or $200 general admission, and every dollar raised benefits the Colon Cancer Coalition.
That is the short version. Here is the part that matters more.
Why Steve Started the Caboose Cup
Most charity golf tournaments start with a committee. This one started with a phone call.
Steve Robertson's mother is a colon cancer survivor. She is the reason the Caboose Cup exists, and she has been the inspiration behind every single one of the seven tournaments he has hosted since.
In Steve's own words: "This event exists to raise awareness, support prevention, and help save lives through early detection of colon cancer. And for me, this cause is deeply personal. My Mom is a colon cancer survivor and the inspiration behind every single Caboose Cup. That's why we keep showing up. That's why we keep growing. That's why every birdie matters."
Seven years is a long time to keep an event going. Plenty of charity tournaments run once, raise a little money, and quietly disappear from the calendar. The Caboose Cup has grown instead, moving from ROK Golf in Bee Cave to Lakecliff Golf Club in Spicewood and now to Grey Rock Golf Club in South Austin, each year drawing more golfers, more sponsors, and more people who have their own reason for showing up.
Because here is what Steve has learned over seven years of hosting this thing: almost everyone has a reason. Ask around the course on tournament day and you will hear about a father, a sister, a college roommate, a client who became a friend. Colorectal cancer touches an enormous number of families, and most people do not talk about it until someone else does first.
That is really what the Caboose Cup is. A day when people talk about it.
Why the Name "Caboose Cup"
The name is a joke, and that is entirely the point.
Colon cancer is an awkward thing to bring up. It involves a part of the body nobody wants to discuss at a dinner party, and that embarrassment is exactly why people put off screening. They would rather not think about it. They would rather not schedule it. They would certainly rather not mention it to a friend.
So the Caboose Cup leans into the awkwardness instead of tiptoeing around it. A slightly silly name, a golf tournament, some raffle prizes, and a scoreboard give people permission to laugh about something they were avoiding. And once they are laughing about it, they will talk about it. And once they are talking about it, some of them will actually go get screened.
The tournament's unofficial motto says it plainly: let's beat cancer one birdie at a time.
Why Early Detection Is the Whole Point
The Colon Cancer Coalition focuses on screening, early detection, and prevention, and there is a very good reason the money goes there.
Colorectal cancer is one of the few cancers that can actually be prevented, not just treated. During a colonoscopy, doctors can find and remove polyps before they ever become cancer. The screening is not only a detection tool. It is a prevention tool.
A few things worth knowing:
Screening now starts at 45, not 50. The American Cancer Society lowered its recommended screening age to 45 in 2018, and other major guidelines have followed. If you are in your mid forties and assumed you had five more years, you do not.
It affects men and women equally. This is not a men's disease, despite how often it gets framed that way.
Cases are rising among younger adults. Diagnoses in people under 50 have been climbing for years, and researchers still do not fully understand why. If you are under 45 and having symptoms, do not wait for a birthday to bring it up with your doctor.
Colonoscopy is not the only option. At home stool based screening tests exist and are far less intimidating for people who have been avoiding the conversation entirely. Talk to your doctor about which test makes sense for you. The best screening test is the one you will actually do.
It is often silent early on. Colorectal cancer frequently causes no symptoms in its earliest and most treatable stages. That is precisely why scheduled screening matters more than waiting to feel something wrong.
Every dollar raised at the Caboose Cup supports the Colon Cancer Coalition's work removing barriers to screening, funding education, and reaching people who would otherwise never get tested.

One Last Thing
If you read this whole post and never register, never sponsor, and never show up on September 21, Steve would still consider it a win if you did one thing:
Schedule the screening.
Call your doctor. Ask what test is right for you. If you are 45 or older and have been putting it off, put it on the calendar this week. If you have a parent or a sibling who has been dodging the subject, be the person who brings it up.
That is what the Caboose Cup has always been about. The golf is just the excuse to get people in a room and talking about the thing nobody wants to talk about.
His mom is proof it works.
